The maps can be adapted to contain a crazy grid of roads that you remember navigating, a place of special significance for you at their very center or a destination you always wanted to explore. 

Creating a Mapperia map starts with selecting an area. The necessary information is extracted, then disaggregated into the separate layers. They are easy to identify: green is for parks and woodlands, blue for rivers, ponds and the sea, black for railways, gray for streets, orange for buildings and red for built up areas. 

Once the layers are created as digital files, the laser gets to work. Jo cuts each map individually, every layer is handled separately. Not everything is automatically cut, so manually removing excess elements, reinforcing cuts  follows the laser cutting. A Japanese Stab inspired binding with silk thread brings all the elements together.
